The road that unites

The whole of Via Transilvanica, by e-bike.

1,400 kilometres across Romania, from Putna Monastery in the north to the Danube at Drobeta-Turnu Severin in the south-west — seven historic regions, 34 cycling stages, every kilometre waymarked by a hand-carved andesite milestone. Here the trail is laid out for e-bike riders: the route, the climbs and the riding times, section by section.

Via Transilvanica
The milestone

The carved “T” marks the way every kilometre — andesite, ~260 kg each, no two alike.

E-bike pace

Riding times here assume an e-bike at a steady 12 km/h — the assist flattens the climbs, so the trail (not the gradient) sets the pace.

The trail, region by region

Seven regions, thirty-four stages.

Via Transilvanica crosses seven historic regions on its way across Romania. Here's the whole trail, broken into its cycling stages — a brief overview for now, with the full detail to follow.

Riding it on an e-bike

Straight from the guide: Via Transilvanica can be ridden on an e-bike. Bike stages run about double the length of the hiking stages, batteries charge at every guesthouse, and Bucovina is the hard part — after it, the trail eases into long, rollable gravel. Heavy rain can turn mountain mud impassable, so watch the weather.

Into the storm

We're back on Via Transilvanica. Day one didn't welcome us with sunshine — it welcomed us with storms, mud, soaked gear and long hours on the bike. But that's exactly what makes this journey memorable.

Along the way
  • Start line: Putna Monastery — kilometre zero of Via Transilvanica
  • The painted monasteries of Sucevița & Moldovița (UNESCO)
  • First long climbs through the Obcinele Bucovinei

After yesterday's rain, mud and storms, today rewarded us with better weather and endless views of Bucovina. Rolling through forests, mountain meadows and villages where time moves a little slower. One day at a time. One pedal stroke at a time.

Along the way
  • Endless ridge views across the Obcine
  • Mountain meadows and timber-built villages

The people you meet

The best adventures are often the ones you don't plan. A mechanical threatened to slow us down — but thanks to Cătălin from Bucovina Bike Shop we were back on the trail in no time. He joined our ride and showed us his favourite hidden corners of the region. Sometimes the people you meet become part of the adventure.

Along the way
  • A trailside rescue by Cătălin — Bucovina Bike Shop
  • Hidden corners of the Dorna land, shown by a local
  • The mineral springs of Poiana Negri

Today we entered the Highlands and reached a place that means a lot to everyone who rides Via Transilvanica: Kilometre 0. The place where the dream was born — where a trail became a movement. With perfect weather and a full day on the bike, reaching Tășuleasa Social felt like arriving at the very heart of Via Transilvanica.

Our last day in the Highlands — long and intense, deep in the forests, riding endless gravel and forest roads through some of the wildest landscapes yet. Today marked an important milestone: we entered Transylvania. Watching the landscapes change and feeling the history beneath our wheels is what makes Via Transilvanica so much more than a bike route.

Finish at Praid

51 km+1,662 mHeavy rainMudFinish line

Another muddy day on the trail. Heavy rain turned some sections into a real challenge, forcing us off-route and onto asphalt for part of the way. Not the ride we'd planned — but that's all part of the adventure. We finished in Praid, where the Via Transilvanica Days were being held, surrounded by fellow riders, hikers and everyone who shares a passion for this remarkable trail. A fitting end to the road.

Along the way
  • Finish line: Praid, at the Via Transilvanica Days
  • The salt land of Székely country — Sovata & Praid
  • Welcomed by the whole Via Transilvanica community
